This part of our site looks at a number of well known garden styles and provides background on their development together with the main features of that type.
It is impractical to provide a complete list of every garden style as there are endless variations and our aim is to provide you with some ideas on how your own garden could be designed and enjoyed.

We have included a section on the two basic styles of garden, the informal and the formal, as most of the other styles are based on these. Gardens can, of course, include both formal and informal elements.
Historically, gardens tended to styled to reflect the availability of local materials and it was almost inconceivable to transport materials form one region to another.
However, the modern gardener does not have these restrictions due to the development of a worldwide transport system so your garden can really be whatever you want.
Whatever your preferences, we hope that these examples will help you to finalise your own garden paradise.
How can we help?At myhome mygarden, we have established a register of approved garden designers and we would always encourage the use of a professional to deal with the details of your design. For more information on this service, see our Garden Design Services section.
